François Perraguin, Director of the Leisure Centre from Saint-Leu-d'Esserent, tells us about its history and the activities it offers.
A sand pit turned lake
Originally, it was nothing like the peaceful leisure destination it is today. But even if it doesn't have quite the romantic charm of the beaches of the Somme, its history is closely linked to the sand. The Saint-Leu-d'Esserent leisure centre was originally a sand pit.exploited for its precious sand and gravel resources.
The site has undergone remarkable transformation over the decades. Because the extraction of mineral particles has gradually released the water from the springs, which seeped into the ground, transforming the quarry into a watery area. The local authorities then embarked on an ambitious project to rehabilitate the sandpit as a leisure area, after buying the site from the Conseil départemental. In-depth environmental studies were carried out to restore the local flora and fauna while preserving the integrity of the ecosystem. Trees were planted, ponds created and nature began to reclaim its rights.
Bordering the Parc de la Garenne, which extends over 15 hectares to the south of the town, this unprotected area was already a popular spot for strolling and wild swimming. The transformation accelerated in the 1990s when the base opened its doors to the public. Since then, it has gone from strength to strength, offering a wide range of products and services. A variety of water and land-based activities to keep visitors happy. As a result, the Saint-Leu-d'Esserent leisure centre has become a place for relaxation and entertainment, while preserving its original character. natural environment.
Activities for everyone
Water games
A small lake now makes up most of the aquatic area. It is ideal for canoeing, kayaking, giant paddle boarding (a kind of large inflatable board that can be used by several people) and, of course, the pedalo. Separated from the lake by an embankment, the swimming part In fine weather, it welcomes swimmers young and old, most of whom come to relax with their families.
But don't be fooled by appearances," warns François Perraguin, the site manager, "because despite the gentle slope of the sand down to the water, the pool is up to four metres deep in places! An ingenious system of remotely-controlled valves means that during the summer months the swimming area can be refilled in less than a day, and pumps empty the pool at the end of the summer so that it can be used again. clean it.

The Leisure Centre also offers a host of activities ideal for a family day out. Animal lovers can try their hand at horse riding in the pony club, while precision enthusiasts can practise their skills in the archery and snow sports enthusiasts will take possession of the ecological skating rinka refreshing alternative to traditional ice cream. They appreciate this place for its pleasant atmosphere, where we don't step on each other. We are deliberately limiting our capacity to 4,500 people. when we could be receiving up to 7,000 customers at the same time.
