If you've enjoyed the Cean Memorial or the Compiègne armistice clearing memorial, it's time to head for the Musée des Bombardments in Saint-Maximin and discover its incredible collection on the theme of the Second World War.
Discovering the Bombing MuseumYou'll be immersed in the past of Saint-Maximin, which was razed to the ground at 95% during... Allied... bombing raids.
The story of a life
In 1943, Gérard Lequien was 13 when he witnessed the crash of a plane shot down in mid-air by the Germans. It was an event that fascinated him and shaped his passion for aviation, Years later, Mr. Lequien began researching and excavating the alleged plane crash sites and meeting former soldiers and their families. Since then, he's been gathering a real collection of maps, documents, aircraft debris or sometimes unusual objects. Don't miss the boats made from bomber tanks and German Luftwaffe airplanes.
A guided tour by enthusiasts
During the a guided tourThanks to Mr Lequien's collection (perhaps you'll be lucky enough, like me, to follow the tour alongside him), we can immerse ourselves in the daily life of the inhabitants of the Oise and the territory of the Creil Sud Oise area during the Second World War.
This guided tour, led by a a team of volunteers as passionate as Mr LequienIt's like listening to your own grandfather reminisce about his past.
A visit to the bombing museum is a unique opportunity to understand the history of Saint-Maximin, a village razed to the ground at 95% by Allied bombing raids. We also learn more about the doodlebugs and theoccupation of the quarries in the south of Oise,on local resistance and on the strategies that enabled the population to protect themselves from the bombing.
