The Princess of Monaco Marie-Catherine de Brignole-Sale (1739-1813), who became Princess of Condé in 1808, was a major political and artistic figure in the second half of the 18th century. She was a great patron of the arts with a vivid imagination, and built a veritable paradise on earth at Betz, in the Oise region. These gardens are the culmination of the Princess of Monaco's artistic career, which began in childhood. Brought up in Genoa in a palace surrounded by masterpieces, it was in France that she was able to exercise her taste to the full, first in Paris and then in the area around Chantilly.
