Located a few kilometres from Chantilly and Senlis, in Creil, the Gallé-Juillet Museum offers a striking insight into the the city's pastthrough the poignant testimony of a family who lived there at the beginning of the last century and the exhibition of several hundred pieces of earthenware, some stamped Creil-Montereau. But not only that...
A journey through time...
We keep in mind the look of these occupants whose period portraits can be seen on the walls of their home.
An immersive museum
At the beginning of the last century, the Gallé-Juillet family, related to the famous painter Ernest Gallélived in a beautiful house on the banks of the Oise river. Their son, Maurice, grew up there, pampered and surrounded by toys, paintings and collectors' items... But History catches up with this beautiful family and mowed down this only child in the prime of his life in 1916, during the battles of the Somme.
Several years later, Mrs. Gallé-Juillet bequeathed her house to the town of Creil, which will turn it into a museum.

A true witness to the industrial past of the city of Creil, a superb collection of earthenware is on display at the Musée Gallé-Juillet.
The earthenware factory, or the glorious past of Creil
Although no remains of the earthenware factory remain in Creil today, earthenware production had a huge impact on the cityas witnessed by Faience-Theatrebuilt on the site of the former factoryor by the Flora,a restaurant named after the famous floral design painted on the earthenware.
This is also reflected in the superb collection of earthenware that you can admire during a visit to the Maison de la Faïence, located just opposite the Maison des Gallé-Juillet. Several hundred are on displayranging from objets d'art to everyday objects and sales items, with different models, according to the fashion of their time. Others, preciously preserved in the museum's collectionsare sometimes exhibited atTemporary exhibitions.
Good to know :
In Creil, the thin earthenware did not remain uniformly white: it received a painted or printed decor and some of them have experienced a great commercial success as the Flora decor (blue flowers and leaves of bindweed, lily of the valley, holly or rose) which was presented at the Paris World Fair in 1855. Or the Rousseau service born from the collaboration of Eugène Rousseau, known for his role in the diffusion of Japonism, and Félix Braquemond, painter and engraver: a highly refined decoration of plant and animal motifs.
The treasure
Right next to this magnificent collection with its many colours and patterns, is the exhibited treasure you’d never suspect.. In the 1970s, a schoolboy makes a strange discovery... excavations followed that unearthed a treasure trove of Gallo-Roman coins, on display in the Tour du trésor (Treasure Tower) of the Maison de la Faïence. This discovery testifies to the importance of the area in Gallo-Roman times.
